When did the SWM Rules, 2026 take effect?

The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 came into force on 1 April 2026 and superseded the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.

Who is a Bulk Waste Generator?

Under the 2026 Rules, the BWG criteria include premises meeting any prescribed threshold such as floor area of at least 20,000 square metres, water consumption of at least 40,000 litres per day, or solid-waste generation of at least 100 kg per day. Is source segregation mandatory?

The SWM framework places source segregation and separate handling at the centre of collection and processing. Waste generators and collection systems must follow the streams and duties prescribed in the official Rules and local bye-laws.

Where should construction and demolition waste go?

C&D waste must be kept separate from municipal solid waste and delivered through the collection, transport and processing arrangements prescribed by the applicable C&D rules and the local authority.
